Airline baggage size FAQs

Do airline bag dimensions include wheels and handles?

Usually yes. Measure the widest external points of the bag, including wheels, handles, pockets and any rigid frame.

Is an underseat bag always free?

No. Many low-cost airlines include one small underseat item, but the permitted size and weight vary. Full-service and long-haul airlines may describe it as a personal item instead.

Does every fare include a checked bag?

No. Basic, Light and flight-only fares often exclude checked luggage. The allowance shown in the passenger's booking confirmation is the controlling allowance.

What happens if a cabin bag is too large or heavy?

The airline may place it in the hold and charge an airport or gate fee. Rules and fees vary, so check the operating airline before departure.
